Sea fight off Monhegan : research papers, 1938-1941.

This collection consists of the manuscript and typescript for the book Sea Fight Off Monhegan (1941) written by Sherwood Picking, as well as some of Picking's research papers. The book is an account of the defeat of the brig Boxer by the schooner Enterprise on Sept. 5, 1813, in the waters near Monhegan Island, Me. Machigonne Press of Portland, Maine, published the book in 1941, after the death of Picking. Includes photographs and correspondence with the Machigonne Press.

Capt. Sherwood Picking was the son of Rear Admiral Henry Forry Picking and Laura Sherwood Picking, a great grandson of John Neal, of Portland, Me., and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1911. He was killed Sept. 1, 1941 in a crash of an RAF Ferry Command plane while it was attempting to land in the British Isles in a dense fog while on his way to take up new duties as assistant naval attacheĢ at the American Embassy in London.
